We're pretty sure Jane Baird knew that something was going to happen today. She was a bit anxious and probably sensed that Alan and I were as well. Alan and I spent the entire morning and afternoon with Jane Baird. She was so sleepy and a little fussy. She threw they biggest fit I've ever seen after she got a shot (can't remember what the shot was but it was something that would keep her heart rate up while under anesthesia). She just came unglued and never settled down after that. The nurse had to give her Versed to help calm her down. It kicked in quickly and she finally calmed down. I rocked her in my arms until the surgery nurse came to get her.
We were so excited to see that the nurse who came to get her was Ashley. Ashley was the same nurse that came to get Jane Baird for the last surgery and she is super sweet. She actually wasn't JB's assigned nurse but Ashley said she requested to be the one to come and get her. When Ashley came we had to change JB out of her dress and into her yellow hospital gown (and of course I had a hair bow that matched it perfectly:) After all the monitors were ready to go, we all got on the elevator and headed down to the 2nd floor for surgery. Anesthesia came to talk to us and then Dr. G came in to mark the area where he would cut her open. We went off to the waiting room and while JB was taken off to surgery. The hardest part was watching the nurses carry my sweet baby away :(
We waited and waited in the waiting room. I passed the time by working on the crochet blanket I am making for Jane Baird. (I taught myself to crochet last night, well actually it was this morning at about 1:30 am.) Alan read his book of course. After a couple hours a nurse called the waiting room to tell us that JB was doing well and that Dr. G was about half way finished. We waited and waited some more and then finally around 5:30 Dr. G came out and told us that everything went very well. He showed us the picture that he took of the inside of the esophagus and the tear (from the previous surgery).
We went up to see JB after she was back in the NICU. She was heavily sedated but fighting so hard to wake up. She opened her eyes and cried a little. She also reached up to grab at the ventilator tubes and kicked her legs a little. The nurse gave her some more Versed and Fentanyl to relax her and alleviate any pain she may have been feeling. Jane Baird could hear us talking and we didn't want her to get upset so we decided to leave so that she could rest. It was so hard to leave her, but we knew that would be best for Jane Baird. We hope that she is resting well and has a restful night. We are just tickled that we have our 3 favorite nurses for the morning, evening, and night shifts. I talked to the charge nurse and requested those three nurses. (Everyone in the NICU knows that they just need to give me what I want or I will bug them to death...they all try to keep me happy. I just want Jane Baird to be in the very best hands, especially in the week following her surgery.)
I will continue to update the blog daily. We will be here at Children's for at least 2 more weeks as Jane Baird recovers. Hopefully it will be a speedy recovery!
Thank you for all of your prayers! We are so blessed to have so many wonderful people lifting us up in prayer. God has truly blessed our family!!!
Jane Baird was a very happy girl when she woke up this morning!
